NEW TAMPA It was lots of sun and pork for the guests at the sixth annual New Tampa Rotary Pig Roast.

More than 500 people gathered March 8 to eat and drink at the family-oriented food and entertainment festival. It raised about $15,000 for the charity projects supported by the Rotary Club of New Tampa and the New Tampa Noon Rotary.

The event, on the grounds of St. Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church, also included a barbecue competition with Sir Pigs A Lot and the Knights of the Holy Grill taking first place for the fourth year in a row. The team, led by Cary Callicoat of Cally's Sticky Bones Barbecue, included Bob Gerrera, Renynold Gosselin, Mike Myers and Gary Gunter. Second place was Circles Restaurant; third place went to the Mike Wallace team.

Judges were local community members including attorney John Vento who joked: "Isn't it good I get to be a judge? I am before them enough."

Wallace, president of the New Tampa Rotary Club, said he was pleased with the event.

"It gets better every year; it's definitely a tradition," he said.
