TEMPLE TERRACE - Mary Jane Neale is proud of her city and honored to represent Temple Terrace as a city council member. And she is equally pleased to be president of the Temple Terrace Arts Council.

It is the organization that will host the 36th annual Temple Terrace Community Arts Festival on Saturday and Sunday at Riverhills Park.

The event, which features paintings, sculptures, jewelry and other handcrafted items, is expected to attract about 200 artists and crafters from throughout the Southeast and close to 5,000 visitors. It will also include a clothesline art exhibit by budding artists from surrounding elementary schools.

"The fact that it has run for so many years says a lot about how much everyone enjoys it," Neale said. "I think its beautiful setting on the (Hillsborough) river is something that really makes the show very special."

Prizes totaling more than $6,000 will be awarded to winners of the juried show, judged by Florida College dignitaries. The arts council plans to spend a similar amount to purchase pieces that will be on display for close to a year at the Lightfoot Recreation Center in Temple Terrace.

The purchased artwork will then go up for bid during the 2012 Spring Art Auction, an event also hosted annually by the arts council. Its proceeds continue to provide funds used to host the festival and buy art for the auction.

Anne Green, an arts council member and longtime organizer of the arts festival, looks forward to it every year.

"With the holidays just ahead it provides an opportunity to do some shopping," Green said. "It's a chance for people to observe original art and a chance for them to meet the artists themselves."
