UNIVERSITY AREA - The University Area Development Corp. will sponsor its fourth annual Confetti Celebration to raise money for programs serving children and families in the University Area.
The event will be Saturday at the University Area Community Center, 14013 N. 22nd St. It begins with refreshments at 6 p.m., followed by dinner and dancing at 7:30. It also includes a silent auction and entertainment.
State Sen. Victor Crist, R-Tampa, is chairman of the corporation's board.

Humor is topic at evening Rotary
HUNTER'S GREEN - Jim Greiner will speak about AMBUCS, a charitable service organization dedicated to creating mobility and independence for people with disabilities, at Thursday's meeting of the New Tampa Evening Rotary.

BSA plans fundraisers
TAMPA - The Gulf Ridge Council, Boys Scouts of America will honor the Rev. Abraham R. Brown and Jose Valiente at its sixth annual Whitney M. Young luncheon, recognizing outstanding service by an adult individual or organization in the development of scouting for culturally and economically diverse youth.
The luncheon will be at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at Carrabba's Italian Grill, 700 N. Dale Mabry Highway. Proceeds will benefit more than 1,500 at-risk youth in West Central Florida.
Brown is pastor emeritus of the First Baptist Church of College Hill, and Valiente is principal-in-charge at LarsonAllen LLP's Tampa office.
Frederick H.L. McClure, a litigator with a concentration in conflict resolution, is the speaker.

The council also plans its first Tampa corporate dodgeball tournament for Saturday at the Temple Terrace Family Recreation Complex.
The tournament is open to all businesses, civic groups, service clubs or groups of individuals. Teams consist of six players and up to four substitutes.
Registration is at 10 a.m., and the first round is at 11 at the complex, 6610 E. Whiteway Drive. The winning team will receive $1,000 in cash, and a traveling trophy will go to the top three teams.

Conference seeks to help families
YBOR CITY - The Latino Coalition will host a free conference, Community Support for Families in Crisis, from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday at the Children's Board of Hillsborough County, 1002 E. Palm Ave.

Girl Scouts offer workshops
SOUTH TAMPA - The Girl Scouts of West Central Florida will offer three specialized training sessions over the next several months to address issues pertaining to today's youth.
The sessions will be at 5002 W. Lemon St. They are:
•"Digital Danger." The seminar will explore issues such as sexting, cyberbullying and social networking sites, as well as offer ways to protect children from online predators and other dangers of the digital age. It will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday. •"Bullying." It will help parents learn how to prevent situations where bullying can occur, as well as how to deal with bullying once it has already happened. It will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Dec. 2.
•"A Hard Pill to Swallow." It will teach parents how to recognize prescription drug abuse in teens, how to help and what resources are available. It will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Dec. 19.
The sessions are $5 per Girl Scout member, $17 for others. To register, visit www.gswcf.org.
