TEMPLE TERRACE - The city's fire department came in second place at the Advance Life Support Competition, hosted Oct. 25 by Flagler County in Ormond Beach.
More than a dozen teams participated, including teams from Nebraska and New York.
Firefighters were faced with a mock mass casualty scenario aboard a jet airliner in which they had to respond to patients' air sickness, cardio problems, an embolism and hazardous materials contamination.
Each team accumulated points based on how well they responded to each incident.
Capt. Carl Sullivan, firefighter-paramedic Chris Ashley, engineer-paramedic Mike Schaer and engineer-paramedic Mike Brown represented Temple Terrace.
Sullivan said the 12-minute time frame and the five patients they had to help made for a challenging event.
"You only had so much time, so there's always a little bit of pressure involved," he said.
Miramar Fire Rescue took first place, and Boca Raton Fire Rescue place third.
