TAMPA PALMS - Freedom High is building a weight room on its campus, thanks to an $8,000 grant from the National Football League's Youth Football Fund.
First-year head coach James Harrell, who played eight years in the NFL at linebacker, said the NFL gives grants to former players working with youth football.
"We've already ordered new weights," Harrell said. "It'll be top-notch."
Harrell said the school's administration was almost as excited as the players.
"They were very excited," he said. "But the kids were excited as well. In order to compete with the Armwoods and Plants, you need a weight room to do that."
Harrell said construction has begun.
"I think it's a great thing," said Freedom athletic director Elijah Thomas. "Everybody benefits from it. The weight room is going to look very good. It's going to be a place everybody can be proud of. It's like night and day from what we had."
