Party is a fun start to 2010 Relay for Life

TEMPLE TERRACE - The free Temple Terrace Relay for Life's 2010 kickoff party will be Tuesday at the Woodmont Clubhouse, 415 Woodmont Ave.

The American Cancer Society Relay for Life is an event that gives people a chance to celebrate the lives of others who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, join with those battling the disease and raise money and awareness for the American Cancer Society.

Registration starts at 6 p.m., with dinner at 6:30. The speaker will be someone who has been affected by cancer. The presentation also will focus on how to get involved in Relay for Life.

Police Academy set for Nov. 7

The Temple Terrace Police Department will sponsor its Citizens Police Academy from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Nov. 7 at the city's public works building, 11210 N. 53rd St.

The free program provides a behind-the-scenes look at the department. It will include information about traffic enforcement, narcotics identification, the canine unit and crime scene processing.

The program is open to Temple Terrace residents ages 18 and older. Graduates receive a diploma, class photo, T-shirt and hat.

Orchid club has show, sale

USF CAMPUS - The Tampa Orchid Club will have a show and sale this weekend at the University of South Florida Botanical Gardens, which is at Pine and Alumni drives.

The sale is from noon to 4 p.m. Friday; 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday; and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday.

Admission is $5 per person, or free for members of the garden. For information, visit www .tampaorchidclub.info.

HYPE pledges scholarship money
YBOR CITY - Hispanic Young Professionals & Entrepreneurs has pledged $10,000 to support scholarship programs in Hillsborough County.

HYPE was established in 2006 and offers young professionals with networking, professional development and community outreach opportunities. All proceeds from HYPE events go toward helping increase the college-going and success rates of Hispanic students in Tampa Bay. Braulio Colon is president of the organization.

The organization's next event is Hype-O-Ween 2009 set for 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. Friday at the Lion's Eye Institute, 1410 N. 21st St.

Advance tickets cost $15 for members, $20 for the public. Tickets are $25 at the door.

Rotary Foundation topic at meeting

TAMPA PALMS - Debra Lowe from the Rotary Foundation will speak Friday at the Rotary Club of New Tampa meeting.

Sara Romeo addresses Rotary

HUNTER'S GREEN - Sara Romeo of Tampa Crossroads will speak Thursday at the meeting of the New Tampa Evening Rotary.
