THONOTOSASSA - Going to a new school can be intimidating for some students.
To reduce the stress, Terrace Community Middle School, 11734 Jefferson Road, launched a program to help new seventh- and eighth-graders understand the importance of being a part of the school's family.
The team-building exercises, "Survivor Challenge - Can You Survive the Storm?," offered more than 50 students an opportunity to work on improving communication. They were assigned to work as a team to better understand what the school family is all about.
"We wanted these students to see a familiar face in the halls," said Helen Ratcliffe, director of student and personnel services at the school. "This team-building challenge brought students together. You could see how they were standing alone when they arrived, but by the end of the day, they were trading e-mails and cell phones numbers."
The school is accepting students for this year's eighth-grade classes. School officials also are accepting applications for the 2010-11 school year. For information, go to www.tcmstornadoes.com or call (813) 987-6555.
