TAMPA - At the turn of the century, before the preferred modes of human contact were e-mail and text messages, ladies decked in the finery of the day sashayed to a more refined venue for socializing: the tea.
To help modern-day Floridians appreciate that part of their heritage, volunteer docents at Cracker Country offer Victorian teas to any group of five or more interested in learning the finer points of sipping and tasting in the late 1800s and early 1900s.
Served in floral porcelain in the stately Governor's Inn at the east end of the Florida State Fairgrounds, Twinings Earl Grey Tea is accompanied by small savories and sweets, as was common in the Victorian era.
The tea was stored in locked chests to keep servants from helping themselves, Gantous explained. Knowing proper etiquette was essential. At a standing tea, for example, tea was served with saucers that could hold the cup and the accompanying treats. Lemon or milk could be added, but not both, because lemon curdles milk.
Country Tea Time is offered every Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday from 1:30 to 4 p.m. Admission is $20 per person. Reservations are required and can be scheduled by calling (813) 627-4225 or www.crackercountry.org
