The exhibit opening this weekend at the University of South Florida Contemporary Art Museum offers a new way to experience travel.

The title, "Elsewhere," says it all.

"It's a different place, a place outside of what you're used to," said David Norr, curator for exhibitions and special projects at USF's Institute for Research in Art.

Hailing from the United States and "elsewhere," the eight artists in the exhibit interpret the theme in their own way through sculpture, photography and video installations.

For example, French artist Emanuel Licha created a commissioned piece called "Preparing for Serious Events" (above), a two-channel video on monitors, with two different feeds from two different camera angles. In one video, rioters are burning down a building while in the other, cheerleaders are egging them on.

"It's a very entertaining exhibit," he said. "There's humor and satire, and it's loaded with some very powerful, absorbing and historical imagery."

- Esther Hammer

"Elsewhere" features works by Olaf Breuning (Switzerland), Patty Chang (USA), Stuart Hawkins (USA), Joachim Koester (Denmark), Sarah Anne Johnson (Canada), Emanuel Licha (France), Nancy Holt and Robert Smithson (USA); runs through Oct. 13; opening reception is 7-9 p.m. today; symposium with Norr and two artists is 10 a.m. to noon today; free admission; University of South Florida Contemporary Arts Museum, 4202 E. Fowler Ave., Tampa; (813) 974-2849
