Browsing in Barnes & Noble one afternoon, I found myself drawn to the "Summer Reading" table, where neatly stacked piles of books by Charles Dickens and John Steinbeck and Zora Neale Hurston sat waiting for the teenagers who were supposed to read them by the first day of school. HUNTER'S GREEN - Amanda Louise Martin, whose murder-mystery became the talk of the neighborhood, died June 19 of complications from lupus. Martin, 36, published her first book, "A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood," in November. Diagnosed at age 17, Martin had end-stage renal disease and wrote the manuscript for "Beautiful Day" in longhand while hooked up to a home dialysis machine. ...more
